EOS 5D Mark II Video – Learning to fly
Posted by admin under: Photography; Video .
It is not often you see something that is truly inspirational, but this timelapse video (ie mainly composed of still frames) is up there with the best.
Shot by professional videographer Tom @ timescapes.org, this is truly worth watching – Enjoy!
For those interested in the technical bits, Tom shot it on his Canon EOS 5D Mark II as a series of time lapse stills. He has this to say about the the night driving stuff:
” It was shot at f/1.4 @ ISO 6400, with like 1/2s exposures. The 5D2 is so fast, I can actually hand hold it for star shots. I use a simple suction mount that goes onto the body of the car or the windshield.” ”All the night stuff is stills. Only a handful of shots were done in 1080/30p video mode on the 5D2 – the birds at Salton Sea, boy fishing, surfers with oil rig.”
Beautiful work from Timescapes.org Thanks for the link Nick
UPDATE: I’ve just heard from Tom Lowe who created this great clip.
Tom describes it as follows: “This footage is part of my first film, which will be titled “These Short Days” — a 50-min, Baraka-style movie showcasing the American Southwest. I am hoping to finish and sell it to Discovery, PBS, etc, but I am more of a shooter than a businessman, so I am looking for a producing partner with industry experience and contacts”.

VERY impressive Nick, what a blur between photography and film-making! I now really want a 5D Mk2
Thanks for the link, great stuff!

The EOS 5D Mark II is a very impressive camera and the stills and video quality are brilliant. Sadly though, the codec used for video capture is appalling to edit, so it needs transcoding to something more manageable for edit, ie ProRes, Cineform or AN other to be truly usable.
It would be really good to know more about the author of the video, who I only know as Tom.
