Stills to Video – Convergence Now
Posted by admin under: Camera; Photography .

Megan Fox by Greg Williams
Not a bad picture you might think? Good enough for the cover of Esquire in the US for June? Of course.
The only unusual thing about this image is that it is one of a sequence, shot at 24 FPS, on a RedONE digital video camera.
The images were captured by the noted US Photographer, Greg Williams: the message is that Convergence is here – Now!
A RedONE camera has a 12 Million pixel chip and excellent prime lenses. Not so long ago, the high end digital backs had ‘only’ 6 or 11 Million pixels and were shooting magazine covers and ad campaigns for billboards. While top line digital backs now have 40-60 Million pixels, by and large the printing presses are the same.
Naysayers, please take note.
Greg Williams describes the shoot: “It allowed her to act,” “She could run scenes without being reminded by the sound of a shutter every four seconds that I was taking a picture. As in still photography, a lot of it is capturing unexpected moments. This takes that one step further.” He then went back and pulled out the best images, which you can see in Esquire’s June issue, on sale May 10. Plus, there’s a fantastic by-product: Even though we made the film to get the stills, we were left with ten bewitching minutes of footage of a beautiful woman. We edited it down to a mini movie, which will be available at esquire.com/megan on May 4.

Good post, Nick.
It’s exciting times for photographers as these new tools open up new ways to tell stories. Regarding the ‘allowing her to act’ quote, that probably scares some people. See my post on my blog about how I believe car magazines are missing a trick with video. http://tinyurl.com/cjt78m
I think some traditional print publications see video as the enemy to print, but it need not be that way, as your article shows.
